Black Arctic

Short film, 2017

This speculative short film resulted from a field trip to Murmansk region during the postgraduate research residency at Strelka Institute, Moscow. Produced in collaboration with Karina Golubenko, Alina Nazmeeva, Inna Pokazanyeva, Francesco Sebregondi.

The site-specific fictional narrative is set in the near-future Arctic that becomes uninhabitable for humans due to an ecological catastrophe, based on the research and footage collected during the field trip. Oil extraction is fully automated and keeps going despite the human population leaving the area. The film imagines how the AI governing the oil production is trying to get in touch with people living outside the area.
